Chief Promises Police Around Racino by Stephen Geffon - Queens Chronicle: South Queens News

Read original...

As the September opening day for the Resorts World New York casino in South Ozone Park edges closer, nervous neighborhood residents concerned about their safety were assured by Patrol Borough Queens South Assistant Chief James Secreto that the police manpower necessary to protect them will be provided.
Secreto told the members of the 106th Precinct Community Council at their meeting last week that if top police officials don’t give him the additional officers he has requested, he will provide them from the borough’s resources.
“One way or another we are going to have cops there,” said Secreto.
Residents fear that the influx of an estimated 8.4 million people a year into the neighborhood will add traffic and increase the risk of crimes and quality of life issues. Some expressed concern that prostitutes may be drawn into the area.
City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) has also voiced the concerns of his constituents and recently asked for additional police officers for the 106th Precinct in advance of the casino’s opening.
“While the new racino is scheduled to open later this summer, many of my constituents are still concerned about the level of police protection the community will receive from the NYPD,” Ulrich wrote in a recent letter to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. “Despite the fact that vehicular and foot traffic will increase, it still remains unclear if and when the local precinct will receive additional police personnel. Undoubtedly, more police officers will be needed to patrol the residential neighborhoods surrounding the facility.”
David Quintana of Ozone Park told Secreto that he saw a large contingent of police officers standing around the New York Stock Exchange building in Manhattan. He said that in light of the expected 30,000 visitors a day coming into the neighborhood surrounding the casino, “we could use some of those officers out here.”
On the noise abatement front, the precinct’s ongoing effort to quiet troublemakers resulted in the issuance of 26 noise summonses during the period from May 30 to June 5, according to Community Affairs officer Ken Zorn.
He added that 32 noise summonses were issued the week before.
A Lindenwood resident complained that cars are still speeding through area stop signs without stopping. Capt. Thomas Pascale told him officers would be made aware of this problem.
With the Fourth of July approaching, 106th Precinct police officers will be taking a zero-tolerance stance on fireworks use.
“For children’s safety and the safety of all residents, we are going to make sure that we prevent the discharge of fireworks,” said a police department official.
Fireworks burn at an extremely high temperature and can quickly burn through clothing and skin, causing serious injuries. Items such as sparklers are mistakenly thought to be safe, when even they can be very dangerous, the officers said, adding that fireworks should only be handled by trained professionals.
Pascale said that 40 additional police officers will be assigned to the precinct’s fireworks detail on July 4.
He also said that a police command post will be set up in front of the Starbucks store on Crossbay Boulevard.

Center will officially open on Monday, June 6

Resorts World Casino New York will officially open an on-site employment center to help local residents apply for permanent positions at the new South Ozone Park facility, officials announced today standing alongside New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo, Assembly Member Vivian Cook, Assembly Member Michelle Titus, City Council Member Ruben Wills, Community Board 10 Chair Betty Braton and others.

As promised, we are continuing to hire from the local community and this on-site jobs center will allow us to do just that,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World Casino New York. “The new jobs center will be critical in helping us identify the best local candidates so we can build a talented and robust Resorts World family based right here in Queens. We are very much looking forward to continuing to grow our permanent staff.”

The new on-site employment center is yet another resource for local Queens residents looking for opportunities at Resorts World Casino New York. Resorts World is already working with three local employment services centers to identify candidates for careers at the new facility:

· NYC Business Solutions – Queens Workforce 1 Career Center;
· Educational Opportunity Center (EOC); and
· Council for Airport Opportunity (CAO).

More information on permanent positions and future recruiting events at Resorts World Casino New York is available at www.rwnewyork.com.

Having an on-site employment center is not only a great way for local residents to learn about careers here at Resorts World, but also a great way for us to interact with the individuals who will be operating this facility once it opens,” said Kevin Bogle, Vice President of Human Resources at Resorts World Casino New York. “The purpose of this employment center- along with the support from the three employment services centers that we have already been working with for months – is to help us hire talented individuals from within the local community, so we have a facility here in Queens that is run by Queens residents themselves.”

The new on-site employment center will officially open on Monday, June 6th and will be open weekdays from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Applicants can visit the employment center to learn more about career opportunities at Resorts World Casino New York and submit applications for open positions.

At the end of last month, Resorts World Casino New York officially launched the hiring process for permanent positions at the facility, announcing that candidates from the local community will be hired first. This announcement marked the first phase of staffing Resorts World in such fields as entertainment, hospitality, security and food services.

Resorts World also recently announced that in an effort to enhance the overall experience at the new facility, the company will hire a staff of 1,150 permanent workers; a near-50% increase from original estimates. The bulk of the additional 350 employees will work in the facility’s food and beverage, customer service and security departments.

By creating an expansive outreach network that fosters community participation, Resorts World Casino New York has developed a strategic approach toward recruiting the most talented workforce in Queens and entire New York City metropolitan area. Resorts World Casino New York Announces Near-50% Increase in Number of Permanent Jobs

Facility will employ 1,150 permanent workers, 350 more than originally anticipated; career listings and vendor proposals for new casino to be updated weekly at www.rwnewyork.com

In an effort to enhance the overall experience at Resorts World Casino New York, the company will hire a staff of 1,150 permanent workers; a near-50% increase from original estimates, officials announced today.

“We want to bring quality jobs to Queens and produce a top-flight facility – two goals that go hand-in-hand,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World Casino New York. “We saw the potential to enhance aspects of our facility and the best way to do that is by creating a more robust workforce. With additional staff comes superior customer service and an overall better experience for our guests at Resorts World. Additionally, more positions mean more job opportunities for local residents looking for work. This is a big step in our goal to help revitalize the Queens economy.”

The bulk of the additional 350 employees will work in the facility’s food and beverage, customer service and security departments.

“To be clear, we are hiring locally, first,” said Kevin Bogle, Vice President of Human Resources at Resorts World Casino New York. “We are not only hiring directly from the community, but are also working hand-in-hand with local employment centers to help us identify local candidates who we might not otherwise reach on our own. Our goal is to create a facility where customers will be hosted by a knowledgeable and attentive staff in an environment that is welcoming and safe. We have decided that bringing more people from the local neighborhoods aboard is the best way to accomplish this goal.”

Last week, Resorts World Casino New York officially launched the hiring process for permanent positions at the facility, announcing that candidates from the local community will be hired first. This announcement marked the first phase of staffing Resorts World in such fields as entertainment, hospitality, security and food services.

Through its extensive outreach efforts, Resorts World is committed to enlisting a diverse staff and awarding vendor contracts to local Minority Women-Owned Businesses (MWBEs). Resorts World recently announced that minority and/or female workers compose 54% of the project’s construction workforce. Additionally, the percentage of MWBE-certified subcontractors and suppliers working under construction manager Tutor Perini now stands at 25% of total contracts awarded to date. Tutor Perini has already awarded nearly $50 million in sub-contracts to MWBEs.

Job applications and vendor proposals may be submitted through the ‘careers’ and ‘vendor forums’ sections of Resorts World’s website,

Resorts World Casino New York has officially launched the hiring process for permanent positions at the facility, and every effort will be made to hire from within the local community, officials announced today.

Job applications and vendor proposals may be submitted through the ‘careers’ and ‘vendor forums’ sections of Resorts World’s website,www.rwnewyork.com

“We are very excited to officially start staffing Resorts World,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World Casino New York. “This project is not just about bringing jobs to Queens; it’s about creating careers and forming relationships with the local community. Our goal is to build a local, diverse and hardworking family of Resorts World employees that will move up within our company. With this announcement, I am very excited to start the process of building that family.”

This announcement marks the official beginning phase of hiring the more than 900 workers expected to permanently staff Resorts World in such fields as entertainment, hospitality, security and food services. Through its extensive outreach efforts, Resorts World is committed to enlisting a diverse staff and awarding vendor contracts to local Minority Women-Owned Businesses (MWBEs).

“With so many Queens neighborhoods plagued by high levels of unemployment, Resorts World’s permanent staffing outreach could not be more timely,” said Harry Wells, Director of York College’s Small Business Development Center. “There are some terrific opportunities at Resorts World out there for Queens residents and local businesses looking for work. Few employers offer so many job and vendor possibilities in such a wide range of fields, and even fewer are as committed to supporting local MWBEs as is Resorts World; in fact, three of the MWBEs that I work with have already been subcontracted for the project. I look forward to continuing to work with Resorts World to identify even more local establishments, MWBEs and careers services centers to meet its needs for commodities, goods and services at the new facility.”

Resorts World recently announced that minority and/or female workers compose 54% of the project’s construction workforce. Additionally, the percentage of MWBE-certified subcontractors and suppliers working under construction manager Tutor Perini now stands at 33% of total contracts awarded to date. So far, Tutor Perini has awarded nearly $50 million in sub-contracts to MWBEs.

“For four months we have been working with employment services centers to prepare for today,” said Kevin Bogle, Vice President of Human Resources at Resorts World Casino New York. “We are a company that is committed to empowering the local community and hiring from within the local area. That's what we have been doing in the construction phase of this project, and that's what we will continue to do as we take this critical step in preparing Resorts World to open for business.”

By creating an expansive outreach network that fosters community participation, Resorts World Casino New York has developed a strategic approach toward recruiting the most talented workforce in the Queens and New York City areas. In partnering with community-based organizations, placing advertisements in local publications and hosting on-site job fairs, Resorts World Casino New York will continue to build a dynamic workforce ready to meet the needs of its customers and the community.

Resorts World Casino New York: More Than Half of Construction Workforce Comprised of Minorities and Women

33 Percent of Current Subcontracts Have Been Awarded to MWBEs, Far Exceeding Contracting Norms throughout New York City

More than half of the Resorts World Casino New York’s current construction workforce is composed of minority or female workers, far surpassing the 25% goal set in its application to New York State, officials from Resorts World Casino New York announced today.

Minority and/or female workers today compose 54% of the project’s construction workforce. Additionally, the percentage of MWBE-certified subcontractors and suppliers working under general contractor Tutor Perini now stands at 33% of total contracts awarded to date.

“Creating a diverse workforce has always been a top priority for Resorts World Casino New York, which is why we are so pleased that we are far exceeding even our own high expectations in this crucial area,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World New York. “This project is about creating a facility for New Yorkers and tourists of all backgrounds, so we are excited that the individuals and organizations responsible for its construction are as diverse as those we hope to attract once it opens.”

These numbers are particularly noteworthy given a recent study from the NYC Comptroller’s office, which revealed that in 2010, just 2.4% of contracts awarded by city agencies were to MWBEs. With 33% of Resorts World Casino New York’s subcontracts awarded to MWBEs, the project exceeds even that of the department with the highest participation.

To date, Tutor Perini has awarded nearly $50 million in sub-contracts to MWBE’s.

“Resorts World’s commitment to diversity reflects their unwavering goal of improving our communities,” said Ruth Harvey, President of the Jamaica-based project cleanup firm, Ametis Industries, Inc. “As the proud owner of a certified Women Owned Enterprise, I am especially happy to see that Resorts World has followed through with its stated commitment to creating a workforce as diverse as the community in which the new facility will operate. I look forward to seeing the finished project, which I know will be a source of pride for all of Queens.”

In addition to far exceeding MWBE standards for the construction phase of the project, once the facility opens, Resorts World Casino New York will employ a diverse permanent workforce with 60 percent of jobs slated to go to minorities and women

Resorts World Casino New York recently announced a condensed opening schedule that will allow the new casino at Aqueduct Raceway to open its doors with far more components in place months earlier than expected. Under the schedule, 2,500 Video Lottery Terminals will be operational – rather than the 1,600 originally slated – when the casino opens in the late Summer.

Once fully operational, Resorts World Casino New York is expected to permanently employ more than 900 workers in the entertainment, hospitality, security and food-service fields; and provide $300 million in annual revenue for the state.

In partnering with community-based organizations, placing advertisements in local publications and hosting on-site job fairs, Resorts World Casino New York will continue to build a dynamic workforce ready to meet the needs of its customers and the community.

Information on further bid packages will be announced in the coming weeks. For information about permanent jobs at Resorts World Casino New York, please visit www.rwnewyork.com.

Genting to Present $1 Million Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial

The purse for this year’s renamed Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial, Aqueduct Racetrack’s premier race, will increase to $1 million through a presenting sponsorship from Resorts World New York to The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), officials from both groups announced today.

We are honored to be a part of this historic race that has been a staple of Queens for decades,” said Mike Speller, President of Genting New York. “From the beginning, one of our goals in building the new casino facility at Aqueduct has been to strengthen and support New York’s storied horse racing industry. Through this partnership with NYRA, we have taken a significant step in that direction. This year’s Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial is sure to be a spectacular event that will bring out racing enthusiasts and make all of New York proud.”

The Grade 1 Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, serves as the final prep race on the NYRA circuit for the prestigious Triple Crown, comprising the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.

Resorts World has been a great partner and this sponsorship reflects the depth of their ongoing commitment to New York racing,” said NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward. “We are eagerly anticipating the opening of the Resorts World New York Casino, a cutting-edge facility that will help create stability for the state’s thoroughbred industry and reinvigorate the community surrounding Aqueduct Racetrack.”

Mentioned as a probable contender for the Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial is Queens native Mike Repole’s undefeated Uncle Mo. The 3-year-old son of Indian Charlie won the 2010 Eclipse Award for Champion Two-Year-Old Male and is the current favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

The 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial has long been a springboard to Derby success. Beginning with Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox in 1930, 11 Wood winners have gone on to take the Run for the Roses, among them Triple Crown heroes Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946) and Seattle Slew (1977), as well as Twenty Grand (1931), Johnstown (1939), Hoop Jr. (1945), Foolish Pleasure (1975), Bold Forbes (1976), Pleasant Colony (1981) and Fusaichi Pegasus (2000). In addition, Secretariat finished third in the 1973 Wood before going on to sweep the Triple Crown, culminating with his incomparable 31-length victory in the Belmont.

Resorts World New York’s Aqueduct redevelopment project – expected to open later in the Summer – will include 4,525 Video Lottery Terminals, two new restaurants, a two-story sports bar and other structural improvements to the area adjacent to the racetrack including a new parking structure, renovations to the existing racetrack facilities and the construction of an enclosed walkway from the MTA subway stop to the casino entrance.

Once fully operational, Resorts World New York is expected to permanently employ about 1,000 workers in the entertainment, hospitality, security and food-service fields.

Resorts World New York Condenses Schedule to Ensure Dynamic Late Summer 2011 Opening & Full Completion of Facility by End of Year

Addition of almost 1,000 Video Lottery Terminals to stage 1 opening; Main entry, Porte Cochere, International Buffet; and Parking Garage to now be included in first stage of opening;

Resorts World New York today announced a condensed opening schedule that will allow the new casino at Aqueduct Raceway to open its doors with far more components in place months earlier than expected.

Under the schedule, 2,500 Video Lottery Terminals will be operational – rather than the 1,600 originally slated – when the casino opens in the late Summer.

“This accelerated schedule will allow for not only a more robust opening and better customer experience with more food and beverage facilities than previously planned, but the completion of the facility – including the operation of all 4,525 Video Lottery Terminals -- by the end of 2011, three months ahead of schedule,” said Mike Speller, President of Resorts World New York Casino.

With the accelerated schedule – which will now take place in two phases, rather than three – not only will more VLTs be operational when the first stage launches, but the main entry, the porte cochere, the international buffet and the parking garage will be part of the initial opening, as well.

• The 360 Bar and entertainment space

• The remaining 2,000 VLTs
• Two fine dining restaurants, Genting Palace and RW Prime
• An additional grab-and-go quick food outlet.
• Colony lounge and the VIP Crockfords Casino

Casino Construction and Round the Clock Simulcasting at Aqueduct by Brian Jackson - New York Horse Racing | Examiner.com

Read original...

You knew it was coming, folks. Well, guess what? It's come. The backstretch at the Aqueduct Racetrack is closed. I know - considering the season, it's kind of anti-climactic. Aqueduct Racetrack is closed for training and will not reopen until April 14, 2011. All things considered, it's good news for the New York Horse Racing Association. The closing is to allow for more construction on a new casino (Genting's Resorts) that will certainly help to subsidize the New York horse racing industry at large.
The 350+ horse stables being affected by the closing have been moved to NYRA's Belmont Park, and will return when construction is finished. The move will allow uninhibited construction of the casino to take place, which means the sooner New York residents will have slot machines and casino table games to supplement their horse racing wagers. At least that's the theory. Despite the closing, Aqueduct remains an active place with live simulcasting taking place round the clock.
The NYRA is also staying active during this harsh winter season, and has begun hosting a new "dark day" television show called "The NYRA Network Presents Raceday". Airing strictly on dark days on Channel 71 of the NYRA television network (generally Monday's and Tuesday's), the new show will cover the latest happenings in the horse racing industry (What else, right?). Hosts include NYRA TV Director and race caller, John Imbriale, along with various NRYRA TV analysts.
Helping to fill the void left by the NYCOTB Racing Network (NYCOTB was shut down late last year), the NYRA Network Channel 71 airs racing content for 12 hours straight: 11 am to 11 pm. When NYRA's live races are wrapped up, the channel airs highlights from the most popular simulcast signals around the country. Check it out!

Feds Reject Plan for Full-Blown N.Y. Casino by Tom Precious - BloodHorse.com

Read original...

New York racetrack casinos lost a major potential competitor Feb. 18 after federal officials rejected a plan for a sprawling, full-blown casino just 90 miles from Manhattan.

The U.S. Department of Interior formally ended a bid for an off-reservation casino to be built in the southern Catskills resort region by the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohicans.

The Wisconsin-based tribe struck a deal late last fall in the final weeks of the outgoing administration of former New York Governor David Paterson for the casino rights in return for settling a long-standing land claims lawsuit by the tribe for what it maintains is ancestral land in central New York.

Racetrack-based casinos, which in New York can offer video lottery terminals, expressed concerns that they could not compete with the massive casino, complete with table games, that the Mohicans were proposing to build not far from the Monticello harness racetrack.

Genting New York, the developer of the long-stalled casino at Aqueduct racetrack that is expected to open this summer, has gone so far as to say it would be scaling back some plans for the new facility as a result of the competition from the proposed Catskills casino. Officials at racinos from Yonkers to Saratoga Springs openly worried about business dropping off by a Catskills casino.

The bid by the Wisconsin tribe was also opposed by New York Indian tribes, which urged the federal regulators to reject the out-of-state Indian bid for what would have been a lucrative casino.

"By rejecting this ill-conceived compact, the Department of Interior has allowed New York State to go back to the drawing board and put together a gaming policy that makes sense,'' said the New York Gaming Association, a group representing New York racetrack casinos.

The tracks say they should be allowed to operate full-scale casinos at their facilities.

"We are extremely pleased with DOI's decision and look forward to working with Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo and the state Legislature to develop a gaming policy that maximizes revenue, creates jobs and keeps the racetrack casino economic engine churning,'' the group said.

Aqueduct Firm Hires Ozone Park Groups by Anna Gustafson - Queens Chronicle -

Read original...

The general contractor for the new Aqueduct racino in South Ozone Park awarded three construction bids totaling more than $51 million to groups from Ozone Park, Resort World New York said this week.

“Queens needs revenue, and for this reason, we are fully committed to awarding construction bids to as many local businesses as possible,” Michael Speller, president of Resorts World New York, said in a prepared statement. “This casino will fill two crucial needs. Not only will Resorts World New York create a tremendous facility that will generate considerable revenue for Ozone Park, New York City and New York state, but the casino will also help revitalize and ultimately stabilize Queens’ businesses and economy.”

Speller said they have focused on hiring locally, including bringing jobs to businesses owned by minorities and women, to build what is now known as the Resorts World New York racetrack casino.

Tutor Perini, the general contractor, awarded a $25.1 million contract to WDF Inc. to provide heating, ventilation and air-conditoning work; a $19.2 million contract to Five Star Electric; and $6.8 million to WDF for plumbing.

We are just so excited that Resorts World New York is following through on its promises to Ozone Park businesses,” said Larry Roman, chairman and CEO of WDF Inc. “At at time when Queens so desperately needs revenue, it is a blessing to have such a great project for so many of our local businesses to work on. Ozone Park is home to some of the finest construction businesses in the world, and for that reason I have no doubt that Resorts World New York is going to be a first-class facility that will benefit the entire region.”

The announcement comes about a week after Tutor Perini announced that more than one-third of their subcontractors are certified as a Minority or Women Owned Business Enterprise.

Tutor Perini has so far awarded $135 million to subcontractors in the greater New York City area.

The gaming facility at the race track, the city’s first casino slated to open its doors this summer, is expected to employ more than 900 people and generate at least $300 million in annual state revenue, according to officials with franchise operator Genting New York.

There are more than several hundred people now working at the site. The first phase of the three-stage project will include 1,600 video lottery terminals and a central bar.

New York Racetrack Casinos Issue Statement on Rejection of Catskill Compact

The New York Gaming Association, representing racetrack casinos in New York, today issued the following statement about the Department of Interior’s rejection of a proposed casino in Sullivan County.

“By rejecting this ill-conceived compact, the Department of Interior has allowed New York State to go back to the drawing board and put together a gaming policy that makes sense. That new policy will hopefully capitalize on existing resources like our racetrack casinos, which already put more than $1 billion per year in tax revenue toward state coffers and could help bolster our sagging economy even further if allowed to operate full-scale casinos.

“We are extremely pleased with DOI’s decision and look forward to working with Gov. Cuomo and the state Legislature to develop a gaming policy that maximizes revenue, creates jobs and keeps the racetrack casino economic engine churning.”

To date, Tutor Perini has awarded nearly $135 million to greater-New York City subcontractors.

Queens needs revenue, and for this reason, we are fully committed to awarding construction bids to as many local businesses as possible,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World New York. “This casino will fill two crucial needs. Not only will Resorts World New York create a tremendous facility that will generate considerable revenue for Ozone Park, New York City and New York State, but the casino will also help revitalize and ultimately stabilize Queens’ businesses and economy. Resorts World is thrilled with the work our subcontractors have done thus far, and certain that once Resorts World New York is completed, it will be a facility that all of Queens will be very proud of.”

The South Ozone Park subcontractors that received the new construction bid packages are Five Star Electric, which was awarded $19.2 million to provide electric work for the project and WDF Inc., which was awarded $6.8 million in one bid for plumbing, and $25.1 million in another to provide HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) work.

We are just so excited that Resorts World New York is following through on its promises to Ozone Park businesses,” said Larry Roman, Chairman and CEO of WDF Inc.
“At a time when Queens so desperately needs revenue, it is a blessing to have such a great project for so many of our local businesses to work on. Ozone Park is home to some of the finest construction businesses in the world, and for that reason, I have no doubt that Resorts World New York is going to be a first-class facility that will benefit the entire region.”

This announcement comes just days after Tutor Perini announced that more than one in three subcontractors and suppliers hired to construct the new Resorts World New York racetrack casino is a New York State certified Minority or Women Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE).

Once fully operational, Resorts World New York is expected to permanently employ more than 900 workers in the entertainment, hospitality, security and food-service fields, provide $300 million in annual revenue for the state and give New York City its first ever casino.

By creating an expansive outreach network that fosters community participation, Resorts World New York has developed a strategic approach toward recruiting the most talented workforce in the Queens and New York City areas. In partnering with community-based organizations, placing advertisements in local publications and hosting on-site job fairs, Resorts World New York will continue to build a dynamic workforce ready to meet the needs of its customers and the community.

Genting Wants More Than 4,500 VLTs by James M. Odato - Capitol Confidential

Read original...

It has yet to open its Aqueduct race track racino, but Genting officials this morning already started talking about currently illegal expansion to allow for Las Vegas-like casino games.
Michael Speller, president of Genting’s proposed racino in Queens — named Resorts World New York — told a Senate racing and wagering hearing that he foresees no obstacles to opening the new facility by midsummer. But he told the Senate panel that it would be swell for Aqueduct, the state and the other racinos statewide to offer table games.
He said the competition in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut can all offer such casino games, and it would be wise for New York to do the same to keep revenues in the Empire State, Speller said. Genting entered into a contract with the state to become a Division of the Lottery franchise offering up to 4,500 video lottery terminals at Aqueduct.
“I agree with you,” said Senate Committee on Racing, Wagering and Gaming Chairman John Bonacic, R-Mount Hope. He said he would like a constitutional amendment to allow for such additional gambling. He also mourned the fact that past attempts to change the Constitution to accommodate for casinos all failed.
“I have visited those places you refer to, and they’re all eating our lunch,” Bonacic said.
Other participants in the hearing on the future of gambling in New York included the New York Racing Association, which suggested that Off-Track Betting corporations should be working with NYRA for operational efficiencies and that the racing and wagering model in New York must be restructured to avoid disaster. NYRA President Charles Hayward said that there should be no concern that the Saratoga meet won’t occur this year. Last year his calls for financial help from the state set off speculation that the summer racing schedule would be in jeopardy. Others spoke about their interest in having the OTBs consolidate. Bonacic said he suspects a bill calling for that will emerge.

More Than One-Third of Construction Subcontracts at Resorts World New York Awarded to Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises

More than one in three sub-contractors and suppliers hired to construct the new Resorts World New York racetrack casino is a NY State certified Minority or Women Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE), officials from Resorts World announced today.

In keeping its commitment to meeting and/or exceeding the goals for MWBEs and minorities and females workforce participation during the construction phase of the $350 million project, Resort World’s general contractor Tutor Perini has firm MWBE subcontractor and supplier commitments totaling approximately 36% of the contracts awarded to date, and in such specialties as electrical contracting, carpentry, security, and other services.

Resorts World New York is fully committed to providing meaningful and substantial contractual opportunities for Minority, Women, and Locally-Owned Business Enterprises in the construction of our new facility at the historic Aqueduct Racetrack,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World New York. “From the beginning, we have made MWBE and local participation on this project a top priority. I am confident these businesses will play a major role in helping us to build an outstanding institution that we hope will attract a clientele just as diverse as the enterprises that are constructing this facility.”

To date, Tutor Perini has awarded $45.8 million and 36% of its total bids to greater NYC MWBE subcontractors and suppliers.

As the owner of a certified Minority Business Enterprise from the community, I am very appreciative of receiving this contract to provide around the clock security during construction at Resorts World,” said Henry Cannady, President of Cannady Security Inc., a firm that has called Queens home for more than 30 years. “It is encouraging to have such a prominent company in the Queens community to follow through on its stated commitment to diversity. We hope other contractors will look to Resorts World New York and Tutor Perini as examples of how to responsibly award contracts in the future.”

Once fully operational, Resorts World New York is expected to permanently employ more than 900 workers in the entertainment, hospitality, security and food-service fields; provide $300 million in annual revenue for the state; and give New York City its first ever casino.
