More Than One-Third of Construction Subcontracts at Resorts World New York Awarded to Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises

More than one in three sub-contractors and suppliers hired to construct the new Resorts World New York racetrack casino is a NY State certified Minority or Women Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE), officials from Resorts World announced today.

In keeping its commitment to meeting and/or exceeding the goals for MWBEs and minorities and females workforce participation during the construction phase of the $350 million project, Resort World’s general contractor Tutor Perini has firm MWBE subcontractor and supplier commitments totaling approximately 36% of the contracts awarded to date, and in such specialties as electrical contracting, carpentry, security, and other services.

Resorts World New York is fully committed to providing meaningful and substantial contractual opportunities for Minority, Women, and Locally-Owned Business Enterprises in the construction of our new facility at the historic Aqueduct Racetrack,” said Michael Speller, President of Resorts World New York. “From the beginning, we have made MWBE and local participation on this project a top priority. I am confident these businesses will play a major role in helping us to build an outstanding institution that we hope will attract a clientele just as diverse as the enterprises that are constructing this facility.”

To date, Tutor Perini has awarded $45.8 million and 36% of its total bids to greater NYC MWBE subcontractors and suppliers.

As the owner of a certified Minority Business Enterprise from the community, I am very appreciative of receiving this contract to provide around the clock security during construction at Resorts World,” said Henry Cannady, President of Cannady Security Inc., a firm that has called Queens home for more than 30 years. “It is encouraging to have such a prominent company in the Queens community to follow through on its stated commitment to diversity. We hope other contractors will look to Resorts World New York and Tutor Perini as examples of how to responsibly award contracts in the future.”

Once fully operational, Resorts World New York is expected to permanently employ more than 900 workers in the entertainment, hospitality, security and food-service fields; provide $300 million in annual revenue for the state; and give New York City its first ever casino.

By creating an expansive outreach network that fosters community participation, Resorts World New York has developed a strategic approach toward recruiting the most talented workforce in the Queens and New York City areas. In partnering with community-based organizations, placing advertisements in local publications and hosting on-site job fairs, Resorts World New York will continue to build a dynamic workforce ready to meet the needs of its customers and the community.
